Mk III An Installation by AIR Ramón Ostolaza Friday, November 15, 6:00 PM. Expressiones is thrilled to announce the unveiling of Ramon Ostolaza’s latest installation this Friday, November 15, at 6:00 PM. This installation, blends sculpture and sound, promises to be an extraordinary experience for all attendees. The evening will feature an artist talk by Ostolaza, offering insights into the creation and inspiration behind this unique work. "In installation, we encounter a flock of ethereal creatures navigating through the darkness. This scene serves as a vivid metaphor for the nature of thought, where, around a central idea, new ideas of diverse nature emerge and flourish. As we ponder various questions, we expand and fortify our essence, much like these creatures finding their way through the ~night~darkness . This proposal embodies a ceaseless quest for innovation and fresh perspectives. Mostrok continues its exploration of the MicroMacro universe, where its creatures have now evolved to take flight. The surrounding soundscape, rich with echoes of ancient times, enhances the experience as a group of creatures soars around a larger, central figure. This flock, suspended in a delicate balance before the observer, beckons them to engage and explore its intricacies up close. This current journey into the MicroMacro universe stems from an ongoing inquiry into the essence of thought. Ideas demand constant reevaluation; for, as we begin to take them as immutable, we risk stagnation and, eventually, decay. Thus, this installation is a dynamic reflection of the ever-evolving nature of thought and creativity.” Ramón Ostolaza New London, Fall 2024. “This current journey into the MicroMacro universe stems from an ongoing inquiry into the essence of thought. Ideas demand constant reevaluation; for, as we begin to take them as immutable, we risk stagnation and, eventually, decay. Thus, this installation is a reflection of the ever-evolving nature of thought and creativity.” Guido Garaycochea Expressiones Curator

Expressiones proudly presents the first solo exhibition of artist-in-residence Verónica Ximénez. Born in 1971 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and a graduate of the University of Guadalajara, Ximénez has made painting her primary tool of expression. Her work translates emotion through gesture, imprint, color, and texture, all stemming from her inner and outer turmoil. Her themes—landscape, nature, urban scenes, color, and abstract forms—may appear simple but are imbued with an intensity and complexity that transcend her refined technique. Ximénez’s art delves into inner worlds, creating a dynamic tension with the external world. The result is a body of work that, while elegant and visually stunning, is deeply charged with drama, gesturalism, and profound reflection.

Expressiones Cultural Center is delighted to announce the “Sea of Stories” first Solo exhibition by Cuban artist Luis Saldaña Soto in the United States, our current artist in residence. The exhibit will open on August 3rd and will be available until September 6th. The opening reception will be held on August 3rd from 6 to 8 pm. “The sea, with its vast and profound blue, unanimously heralds the work of Luis Alberto Saldaña Soto. It is in this immensity that the artist finds his refuge and support. Saldaña undertakes a lucid process through which he unveils a cosmos filled with heterogeneous images, where the influences of surrealism and realism occasionally surface, though he invariably turns to painting as his main medium of expression. A graduate in Painting in 2006 from the Eduardo Abela Provincial Academy of Arts of Havana Province, Saldaña has been honored with multiple awards in provincial salons, and his art has adorned numerous national and international exhibitions.” We look forward to your presence to celebrate the creativity and talent of Luis Saldaña Soto.

You are invited this Friday, January 26th, at 6:00PM to be part of the installation of AIR Josué Orellana from Honduras, final product of his residency at Expressions. The presentation is called: "Nada te llevás" (Nothing you will take with you). The artist tells us; It is a multidisciplinary exhibition, with no pretensions other than to have fun, have a good time, and look inside ourselves, looking for that famous inner child. The world is going through many difficult and complex things, and I, as a Honduran artist in the USA, can not do much or nothing to change it. Still, I can alter my body/mind/being, my environment, and my people, or at least utopia exists in me always; we came with nothing to this world. Likewise, we will leave with nothing, we only take our experiences, experiences, feelings and stories...

In a harmonious blend of inspiration and education, Expressiones Cultural Center is proud to showcase the culmination of months of artistic exploration through its after-school art program. This innovative initiative has been an enchanting collaboration between the Expressiones and the The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of New London, bringing the colorful world of art to the heart of the community. The latest installment of this creative odyssey focused on the reinterpretation of the renowned artist Roger Beers, whose retrospective exhibition currently graces the walls of Expressiones Cultural Center. Our young participants, eager minds from New London, embarked on a journey of artistic discovery as they delved into the life and emotions woven into Beers' masterpieces. This isn't just an art program; it's a celebration of imagination, a symphony of colors and forms that have come alive under the guidance of dedicated instructors. The children, after immersing themselves in the exhibition, were given the liberty to select a piece and breathe life into their own interpretation. The process has been nothing short of intense, yet undeniably fun, spanning several months of learning and creating. Concepts of color, form, harmony, line, and composition became the building blocks for the young artists as they crafted their unique visions. The result is a collection of works that not only pay homage to Beers but also stand as testaments to the kaleidoscope of perspectives that art can inspire. "Art is about freedom—freedom to dream, to interpret, to express. Our program is a platform for these young minds to spread their artistic wings and let their imagination soar," remarked José Garaycochea, executive director at Expressiones Cultural Center in New London. The free ongoing art program is a testament to Expressiones's commitment to providing a nurturing space where creativity flourishes. In collaboration with The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of New London, this initiative has become a beacon of artistic exploration, transcending the boundaries of traditional education. Children participating in the program attend New London schools: Jennings, Isaac, Nathan Hale, Winthrop, MMRS. A collaboration between Expressiones, The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of New London and The Drop-In Learning Center. Expressiones has collaborated with The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of New London and The Drop-In Learning Center on a puppet presentation of “Pinocchio” that will be given a public performance at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford. The program has been providing kids with the chance to learn about the Pinocchio story and its lessons. It has included workshops on puppet-making and has provided life experiences like a field trip to New York City, where the children of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club visited the Pinocchio exhibition at MOMA. Expressiones' partnership with the other two organizations fits with its mission of bridging cultural gaps between diverse communities in the area and providing arts and educational programs for children in New London.

Expressiones Cultural Center is very proud to launch Sisyphus, an exhibition made during his stay in New London as part of his artist-in-residence experience. The title of this exhibition – is a reference to the Greek myth of Sisyphus – the tale of a king who, for cheating death, enraged the gods so much that Hades punished him by condemning Sisyphus to push a boulder up a mountain only for it to roll back down again, for all eternity. “Sisyphean” has invaded our language as an idiom for a difficult, yet pointless task. Albert Camus, the French existentialist, used the myth as a metaphor for our human predicament: if our existence is meaningless, thus futile, how do we make sense of it? This is our choice, according to Camus, and not our dilemma; at the end of his essay “The Myth of Sisyphus”, he states that we must imagine Sisyphus happy.

El Proyecto del Pez puts many techniques together masterfully united by Carlos' imagination giving life to characters. This installation is composed of more than one hundred and fifty quilt pieces, joined, colored, designed to provide the viewer with a unique experience. Guido Garaycochea-curator. “I believe in the cathartic power of storytelling and art making which provides an opportunity to share perspectives with people of diverse backgrounds. A theme in my art is absurdity, caused by a constant awareness of the socio-political conditions and attitudes of humankind. This project is a response to the fragmentation and polarization we are experiencing because of the double Pandemic of socio-political tensions and the current health crisis. Proyecto del Pez encourages participants to be rigorously aware, always observing, searching for beauty, kindness, the struggles of good and band, justice, bias, joy, pain and realizing gratitude and realization of the fragility of our environment, our blessings, relationships and that we are stewards of our planet, our community and ourselves”. Carlos Biernnay The exhibition will be open to the public by appointment until July 30. Guided tours by the artist can be arranged in advance. email: dirctor@expressiones.org

“To deeply explore these objects, I need the stories and events of which they are part. Science fiction literature and all its appliances, poetry and sound are raised as references. But also, the history of art, the drawings of the first machines and the first inventors and their excitement about artifactual innovation. The coordinates play between plausibility and fiction allows me to immerse myself in the possibility of discovering the utopian universe of these objects, inventing their own archeology, their own geographical and historical context.” Maria Colombo Expressiones Artist in Residence
